What cables can (and can’t) do
A cable’s job is to carry the signal reliably. Build quality, length, connectors, and microphonics(cable noise) are real and worth paying attention to. Tonal changes — “warmth,” “blacker backgrounds,” “liquid mids” — from a pricey cable on a normal headphone run are not. Buy a cable for what it physically does, not for a sound it doesn’t change.
What cables genuinely affect
I have spent a career around audio gear, so let me be specific rather than dismissive. Cables really do matter for:
- Build and durability. Strain relief, connector quality, and jacket materials decide whether a cable lasts a year or ten. This is where money is well spent.
- Length and termination. The right length for your setup, and the right plug (3.5 mm, 6.35 mm, balanced) for your gear. Getting this wrong is the most common real problem.
- Microphonics. How much rustle the cable transmits when it moves — a genuine comfort issue, especially with IEMs, and one a better cable fixes.
- Shielding, in specific noisy conditions. On long runs near interference, shielding can matter. On a short desktop run, it does not.
What they can’t do
Change the tone of a working headphone on a normal run. A signal that arrives intact arrives intact; a competent cable does not add “detail,” widen the soundstage, or warm up the mids. Those claims do not survive a level-matched, blind comparison — and level-matched, blind is the only test that means anything here.
This is not a knock on anyone who has been sold the idea. The industry is very good at describing effects that feel real once you have paid for them.
