Fostex TH900
Fostex’s lacquer-red closed flagship — enormous, textured bass and a crystalline treble. Drama over neutrality.
Our take
The TH900 is unapologetically exciting: deep, powerful, well-textured bass and a sparkling, sometimes sharp treble around clean mids — a dramatic V-shape done at flagship quality. Easy to drive but scales with a good source. EQ the treble peak if it bites; the bass is the whole point.
Measured by Jamey Warren on a Head Acoustics HMS II.3 artificial head — raw response, left/right averaged, normalized to 0 dB at 1 kHz. From the Sonic Temple Archive(2008–2014, one unit per model). Honest limits: seating variance runs ±0.4 dB in the mids to ±3.9 dB above 12 kHz, and open headphones read bass-light on this fixture — don’t read fine treble detail as settled. How we measure →
Common questions
Straight answers — the same ones our measurements support.
Does the Fostex TH900 need an amp?
It is easy to drive but benefits from a clean, capable source to control that big bass.
Is the TH900 bassy?
Very — deep and powerful, but textured rather than bloated. The treble is bright to match.
