Why level-matching changes everything

Short answer

Louder almost always sounds better — fuller, more detailed, more exciting — for reasons that have nothing to do with quality. So unless two things are matched to the same loudness, every comparison is rigged in favor of whichever is louder. Level-matching is the single most important discipline in audio, and almost no one does it. Once you know, you can’t unknow it.

Why louder wins

Human hearing is not equally sensitive to every frequency, and that sensitivity shifts with volume: as things get louder, we perceive relatively more bass and treble. That is the equal-loudness effect (the Fletcher-Munson curves). The practical result is blunt — turn any source up a decibel or two and it sounds fuller, richer, and more “detailed,” even though nothing about its quality changed.

How it rigs every comparison

Now imagine A/B-ing two headphones, two amps, two DACs, a cable swap, or an EQ setting. If one side is even1 dB louder — trivially easy without noticing — it will tend to sound better, and you will credit the gear for a difference that was really just volume. A staggering amount of audio belief is built on exactly this: the pricier thing was auditioned a touch louder, or you turned it up because you expected more, and it duly delivered.

How to actually do it

Level-matched and blind is the gold standard. It is also where a lot of “night and day” differences quietly shrink to nothing — which is the point.

This is not a side note for us — it is the whole method. Attune matches levels at±0.1 dB by construction, so when you flip between two tunings and hear a difference, it is a real difference in the sound, not in the volume. Honest comparison, built in.

Before you trust any comparison — a review, a demo, your own A/B — ask whether the levels were matched. If they weren’t, you are mostly hearing which one was louder. Control loudness, and for the first time you are actually hearing the gear.

Why does louder sound better?

What is level-matching?

Setting two things you are comparing — two headphones, amps, DACs, or EQ settings — to the exact same loudness before you listen, so any difference you hear is from the thing itself and not from one being louder.

How do you A/B test audio fairly?

Match the levels (ideally with a meter, to within a fraction of a dB), then compare blind if you can, switching quickly. Without level-matching and ideally blindness, an A/B test mostly measures which option was louder and which one you expected to prefer.

Does level-matching matter for EQ?

Especially for EQ. Boosting a frequency also raises overall loudness, so a boosted setting sounds “better” partly because it is louder. Matching levels is the only way to hear what the EQ actually did.
