What $300 Gets You in Headphones Right Now

At $300, the headphone market is genuinely good. Better than it has any right to be. You are in the territory of the Sennheiser HD 600 series, the beyerdynamic DT lineup, the Audio-Technica ATH-R70X — headphones that were considered reference-class not long ago, now available at a price that does not require much commitment.
The question at $300 is not whether you can get something good. It is what you are actually trying to do. Open-back headphones sound more natural, more like music happening in a room. They also let sound out and in, which means they are for focused listening at home, not commuting or open offices. Closed-back headphones give you isolation. Different tool for a different job.
My $300 recommendation for home listening on vinyl: the Sennheiser HD 600. It has been a reference headphone for twenty years for a reason. Nothing at that price has replaced what it does.
